This time we’re going to learning how to treble crochet (double crochet in US terms).

This simple stitch forms the basis of most granny squares and is used in many blanket patterns. The ripple blanket is mostly made up of treble crochet stitches.

I’ll be adding a granny square tutorial very soon but for now, we’re going to learn to make a simple treble crochet blanket.

For this tutorial I am using:

We will start by making a slip knot and chaining our foundation row. Chain the number of stitches required to give your desired width and then add 3 more chains – this will act as our first stitch.

Chains for treble = (1 x number of repeats) + 3

With our foundation chain made, we’re ready to start our blanket (you can find a video tutorial at the end of this post).

The treble crochet stitch is worked as follows:

  1. Yarn over your hook and insert into the space.
  2. Yarn over the hook and pull back through the space (leaving 3 loops on your hook).
  3. Yarn over pull through the first 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over once more and pull through the remaining 2 loops.

Row 1:

  1. Yarn over the hook and insert into the 4th chain from the hook.
  2. Yarn over the hook and pull back through the chain (3 loops on the hook).
  3. Yarn over pull through the first 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over once more and pull through the remaining 2 loops.
  5. Continue working treble crochets along the chain, working into the very next chain each time.
  6. Once you’ve reach the end of the foundation chain, chain 3 and turn your work anti-clockwise. The chain 3 will act as your first stitch for row 2.
Working into your foundation chain

Top Tip: Some patterns will suggest turning your work clockwise, I suggest (when the pattern has no preference) turning your work anti-clockwise as this gives a neater edge.

We’re now ready to start row 2.

  1. Yarn over the hook and insert from front to back into the top of the stitch next to your chain 3.
  2. Yarn over the hook and pull back through the chain (3 loops on the hook).
  3. Yarn over pull through the first 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over once more and pull through the remaining 2 loops.
  5. Continue working treble crochets along the chain, working into the very next stitch each time.
  6. After finishing the final stitch, chain 3 and turn your work anti-clockwise.

Row 3 onwards:

Keep repeating row 2 until you’re happy with the length of your blanket.

To finish off, after completing your final stitch, make 1 chain then cut the yarn and pull it through the chain to make a loop.

As always, i’d love to see what you all end up making, you can share them with me via my instagram @SophieStitches_UK

Happy crocheting!
